Teams are created for several reasons. Success in business comes down to knowing when and how you should make use of the different members of your team, and once leaders understand this idea, their focus then should be on how to communicate with each of those individual team members.

One of the biggest mistakes that managers make is to not develop team leadership skills. This means leaders must adapt their style to suit their team members, considering their members’ preferences, communication style, gender, culture, and generation. Different people respond to different styles of leadership and to execute as a skilled leader, being aware of the team’s needs is key. Experiment with different styles to see what works best.

It is also a good idea to make team members feel as though they are actively involved in the decision making process in a company. They should be encouraged to contribute their own insights and thoughts on company decisions in order to feel that they belong and are appreciated for what they bring to the table. Listen to their insight before making a decision. Ultimately, it’s your decision, but remember, being heard is important to work satisfaction and you just might learn something.
